ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- About 1,000 students have been sent home early from a school in Rochester after someone reported a student had a gun in his locker.
Charlotte High was locked down shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday when a security officer heard a seventh-grader had a gun. Students were dismissed more than five hours later after a search by dozens of police failed to locate a weapon.
Police say the student in question was later picked up in the city and was being questioned.
Along with teachers, students spent the morning in classrooms with the doors locked and the lights off. School district spokesman Tom Petronio says they were sent home to allow police to search further.
The school employs handheld and walkthrough metal detectors.
