About one third of all Detroit Public Schools students failed to pass at least one core class this year, including more than a half of third-, fifth- and eighth-graders.
Those are the statistics Detroit's school leaders hope to begin turning around when summer school opens Monday. Can 6 weeks of lessons make up for that kind of deficit?
"One day can make a difference," DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb said Thursday as he announced details of the summer school program.
