More school is the answer: DPS urges all kids back Monday

Summer school to supplement the collosal failure of the regular school year, 'Plus it's free.'

About one third of all Detroit Public Schools students failed to pass at least one core class this year, including more than a half of third-, fifth- and eighth-graders.

Those are the statistics Detroit's school leaders hope to begin turning around when summer school opens Monday. Can 6 weeks of lessons make up for that kind of deficit?

"One day can make a difference," DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb said Thursday as he announced details of the summer school program.
