Former Garfield High teacher pleads not guilty to sex charge

Desperate.A former Garfield High School teacher pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge accusing her of having sex with a 17-year-old student.

The bail for Taryn Fairbanks, 33, was reduced from $50,000 to $25,000 during a brief arraignment in King County Superior Court. She was making arrangements to post the bail and is not expected to be booked into the King County Jail, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the King County Prosecutor's Office.

Fairbanks was charged last week with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor. Fairbanks, previously known as Taryn Stermer, resigned from the Seattle school district less than a month ago and moved back to her native Las Vegas. She appeared in a King County courtroom for the arraignment.

Teacher's brilliant reason for taking students to Cuba before Castro dies and spends an eternity in hell: "I'm a communist"

New York Post

A Manhattan high school history teacher, who resigned under fire after taking students on a spring-break "Club Red" field trip to Cuba three years ago, is a self-proclaimed Communist who tried justifying the jaunt by telling Education officials he needed to see Fidel Castro one more time before the dictator died.

The shocking revelations are highlighted in a report released today by the city’s special investigator for schools. It recommends that Nathan Turner — who organized the April 2007 trip for himself and five students of the selective Beacon School on the Upper East Side — never be allowed to work in city schools again.

Turner, whose class walls were adorned with posters of Castro and Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara, resigned in 2008. Besides placing full blame on Turner, 39, for violating federal restrictions for traveling to Cuba, the report also fully exonerates the school’s principal, Ruth Lacey.

Normal? School trains for inevitable school shooting, bomb scare, hostage situation

Around this time of year, teacher training sessions are nothing special. In the past week alone, educators from local districts have taken part in technology, mathematics, and career/technical education workshops. Several others have taken place in the past few weeks, and even more lie ahead.

But the armed intruder training that took place in Perquimans County High School for the first time Thursday was significantly more unsettling than the rest, as school staff and local law enforcement received training on how to handle a school shooting, bomb scare, or hostage situation.

Gathered around a projector screen in the school’s library sat a mix of the district’s principals, counselors, nurses and front desk staff — all present expected to play the most critical disaster response roles, should a Columbine or Virginia Tech scenario play out in Perquimans County.

Ex-Paterson teacher pleads not guilty to sexual assault of 16-year-old student

Dirtbag claims he's innocent and raped the girl not as her teacher, but as a an average pervert you'd find on the internet or alley behind a strip club.

PARSIPPANY-TROY HILLS — A former teacher at a Paterson high school accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student at his home in Parsippany claims he is innocent, and was not her teacher and had no "supervisory role" over her outside of school, his attorney said today.

Scott Van Hoven, 43, formerly employed at John F. Kennedy High School, was charged Wednesday with sexually assaulting the girl May 19 and May 23 at his apartment.

An affidavit alleges Van Hoven was the girl’s drama class teacher as well as supervisor for the school play, "Little Shop of Horrors," in which she participated April 16 and 17.

Lurking In The Schools: "I was just born this way" teacher, tutor, foreign exchange host, camp counselor shows pattern of abuse that goes back decades

Kevin Ricks: Needs to pay for the bullets used at his execution. The Washington Post -- Sunday, July 25, 2010

Kevin Ricks was a gregarious, well-traveled English teacher at Osbourn High School, a Walt Whitman devotee who was so popular that a photo of him in class was chosen to fill the opening page of the yearbook. A writer and photographer himself, Ricks would walk the halls of the Manassas school with a leather-bound journal of his musings tucked in his bag, next to his laptop computer.

What teachers, parents, students and even his wife didn't know was that his journals contained decades of dark secrets, a running handwritten commentary of Ricks's world of obsession, infatuation, pursuit, sexual abuse and international child exploitation.

They didn't know about his library of homemade pornographic videos and explicit photographs capturing his tequila-soaked sex acts with teenage boys he had handpicked. They didn't know about the makeshift shrine boxes containing mementos of the episodes, including sex toys, soiled tissues and hair trimmings.
Even some of the victims didn't know they were victims.

A four-month Washington Post investigation of Ricks's career as a teacher, tutor, foreign exchange host and camp counselor has revealed a pattern of abuse that dates to at least 1978 and has left a trail of victims spanning the globe. But despite the abuse, Ricks moved from one teaching job to the next over nearly 30 years, navigating the nation's public and private school systems undetected, evading traps designed to catch him.

In some cases, school officials and foreign exchange companies knew of or suspected Ricks's inappropriate behavior and simply let him go, leaving the next employer with no idea what was coming.

Mad TV's Public School House Rock PSA: "Dopin' Up Kids With Behavioral Problems"

Mad TV didn't have to do much research for this sketch, eh? Dysfunction Junction, why do you function? Ritalin, Zoloft, Adderall, Dexedrine, Risperdall, Luvox, Paxil, Methylphenidate - if it works for you, why not take two? What's Risperdall? In case you foolishly thought this was meant to be a parody, think again. This is a PSA thinly veiled as a parody.

"Cuz parents push the pills just to keep ya quiet. They wanna quick fix like a happy meal to make ya feel real so they don't gotta deal. To 'help' your head, they'll hand you a med and send ya to bed. Then when you're in skool you won't act like a fool, just don't overdose or else you'll drool."

Educational Toilet: New York public schools top nation in per-student money wasting.

Can you hear that? Yup, it's the continuous sound of more money being flushed away into the black hole of toilets, the govt skool system. Don't count on ever seeing that money again; for the worst investment in human history, there aren't going to be any returns. However, I wouldn't mind getting a refund for all the years of my life ruined and wasted by the govt's system.

USA Today

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York spent $17,173 per student for public education in 2007-08, more than any other state and 67% more than the U.S. average, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics released Monday.

The $10,259 national average — $6,914 less than New York — was a 6.1% increase over 2006-07, the Census Bureau said. New York's spending went up 7.4% over the two years. New York's per-student spending was highest in 2006-07 too at $15,981 per student, and the national average was $9,666.

In lieu of teaching, teachers learn to identify and correct bullying

The publik skools are doing it backwards, again. Now the teachers are learning when they should be teaching. Evidently, teachers - being as dense as the center of a Red Dwarf - need instruction on identifying bullies in their own classrooms and correcting the bullies' bullying styles. Eventually, they hope to make a leaner, meaner, bullying machiner and use the kid as a teacher's aide.

No, teachers still are still unable to teach readin, ritin and rithmitic.

Chambersburg, PA

It wasn't so long ago that there were two schools of thought on how children dealt with bullies in school. You either avoided them or confronted them at their own game.

Stan Shilling, counseling supervisor for the Chambersburg Area School District, said the scene in the movie "A Christmas Story," where Ralphie fights back against the neighborhood bully, Scott Farkas, would be an accurate assessment.

"That's pretty much the world that existed," Shilling said.

Not so much anymore.

Law enforcement uses school as anti-guerrilla warfare training center; students scared

It's all a part of conditioning children to accept terrorism as a normal part of everyday life, as though this country was Iraq. When they're adults in perpetual adolescence, it'll be easier for them to accept the coming police state.

CBS4 - IOWA

It was organized chaos at Moline High School Thursday, when area hospitals, EMS and police trained for a school shooting.

For the area emergency workers, the training gave an inside look of what a school shooting might be like. There were more than 60 volunteers acting as panicked parents or as injured students.Fifteen-year-old Lindsey Gidel participated as an injured student. She was given the role of someone knocked unconscious in the chaos.

"I was really scared; I almost started crying because the thought it could actually happen," Gidel said.

Unfortunately shootings do happen, and that's the main reason for the training."School shootings and workplace violence has been occurring everywhere across the country," explains Rock Island County Sergeant Mitch Lee, "That's why we continue to train."Organizers say part of the goal is also to get emergency crews working together. Students were even rushed to local hospitals like they would be in a real situation.

*YACK* Open-homo lawmaker wants to sissify students by feminizing their food

FAG SALADNo surprise at all that Jared Polis, open congresshomo out of Colorado, would care about making publik skool lunches greener, as though the food was anywhere near the top of the list of problems plaguing the system. If the publik skool system was the Titanic, Polis would be in the galley, apron on, making veggie burgers and serving tossed salads with lite-in-the-loafers dressing.

Polis' swell idea will only cost us $50million, a mere pittance for someone who grew up in Boulder with a silver spoon in his mouth. However, Polis is more than HIV positive that the subsequent reduction in health care costs due to improvements in children's health will "more than offset" the $50mil price tag.

Yeah, right. Anyone who'll believe that voted for this limp wrist.

Another junior high teacher accused of molesting female student

APTOS - A 13-year-old girl says she had a sexual relationship with her math teacher at Aptos Junior High School and detectives are worried other students may have been victimized, the Sheriff's Office reported Friday.

The teacher, Steven Jay Sande, 60, was arrested Friday when sex crimes detectives served a search warrant at his Santa Cruz home, according to Sgt. Todd Liberty.Sande is suspected of having an ongoing sexual relationship with the girl, who was one of his students, during the spring and summer. They had sexual contact on campus, which is on Huntington Drive in Aptos, Liberty said. He said the two also "would go to secluded spots" in the Aptos area to be intimate. The contact continued into the summer, deputies reported.

The girl's parents discovered the alleged inappropriate relationship in July, according to the Sheriff's Office."They became suspicious based on unusual behavior at home," Liberty said.Deputies searched Sande's house, on Esmeralda Court in the Carbonera Estates neighborhood, Friday morning. They seized possible evidence, including computers, but have yet to sift through all of the items.

Slap On The Wrist: Teacher Fired, School Disciplined For Student's Drowning

The Gothamist - July 15, 2010

A Department of Education investigation into the drowning of sixth grader Nicole Suriel during a class trip to Long Beach slammed Columbia Secondary School for poor planning that led to the tragedy. The beach had numerous signs noting there were no lifeguards on duty; there were three adults supervising the 24 students. The DOE fired first-year teacher Erin Bailey and disciplined assistant principal Andrew Stillman and Principal Jose Maldonado-Rivera.

The Daily News runs down some of the findings, including how "Assistant Principal Andrew Stillman decided at the last minute not to go, staying behind to do administrative work. Bailey's boyfriend - former teacher Joseph Garnevicus, 28 - went in Stillman's place, but couldn't swim." Also, "There weren't specific permission slips, just 'blanket' slips from the start of the year that didn't include swimming." The "blanket slips" were only for trips in Manhattan; instead of issuing a permission slip to parents, Stillman simply emailed them, "We're headed to the beach tomorrow."

After Threat of Massacre, High School Builds On False Security

The Denver Post

A threat of a massacre that would top the body count during the Virginia Tech University shootings that was posted on a blog caused such concern that officials took the unusual step of shutting down Westminster High School on April 21.

Buses filled with students were turned away, doors were locked and pupils arriving for their first period were told to return home while police searched the building.

No evidence of an impending attack was discovered in the building.

Although the case was investigated by local police and the FBI, the person who posted the threats on an Internet message board — discovered by someone in Cambridge, England, and e-mailed to the school — has not been identified. The incident shows how seriously school threats are taken these days — and that they can come from anywhere.

VIDEO: Chaos as emergency crews with assault rifles simulate school shooting in anticipation of another inevitable school shooting

Hopkins, CO

Bodies on the floor, smoke in the school halls next to SWAT, instilling fear into children: No expense was spared in order to warn students, teachers, faculty and parents of more violence to come. If the authorities weren't expecting more school massacring Colorado-style, then they wouldn't train for it. As I've said before, it's all part of conditioning children to accept violence as part of normal, everyday life. As adults in perpetual adolescence, it'll be easier for them to accept the coming police state.

The video is appalling.

Insane Colo. school shooting suspect pleads not guilty by reason of insanity

Insane? No duh. So evil in the form of shooting random children is no longer evil, it's not murder, it's just insanity, eh? Land of the libs Colorado will probably believe it and give the guy welfare for the rest of his life instead of the electric chair. Dirtbag.

AP -- Colorado

GOLDEN, Colo. — A man accused of shooting and wounding two eighth-graders outside their middle school pleaded not guilty Monday by reason of insanity.

Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood, 32, entered his plea in Jefferson County District Court, and was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation at the state Mental Health Institute in Pueblo. The evaluation would take at least 45 days.

Eastwood faces 15 charges, including attempted first-degree murder in the Feb. 23 shootings outside Deer Creek Middle School in south suburban Denver. Teachers tackled and restrained Eastwood until deputies arrived.

He faces decades in prison if convicted of the charges or an indefinite amount of time in a mental health institute if found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Before Eastwood accepted the plea, District Judge Christopher Munch told him that "commitment could be the rest of your life." Eastwood nodded that he understood.

Prosecutors are seeking access to observations of Eastwood's actions in jail and conversations between Eastwood and a psychologist made on a jail phone.
